Long Division

This week, in math, I and my group practiced a way to divide big numbers called long division. We learned how to do it step by step. My favorite part was when we brought down more numbers to help find the answer bit by bit.

Place Value

For maths we started learning about place values. That means we looked at how numbers are written in columns, like ones and tens. We practiced figuring out where each number should go. My favorite part was when I found out where the number goes, like when I add 50 cents and 1 dollar and get 1 dollar and 50 cents.

Fly By Midnight

Blink the little baby owl look up at the glorious clouds staring back at him encouraging him to fly and spread his wings. A blink would see a wood pecker gashing at the branch. Beetles rummaging around the stalk, a deer eating greenery.  Blink the little baby owl and his mother owl then awakens and gently opens one eyestare at his mother with big wide eyes looking gently at his mother as he says with his little soft voice “is it time to fly now?” as the mother gently said “no its not time now go back to sleep” as the mother went sleep but blink being the little owl he is he look around gazing throughout the forest

Blink’s first flight was finally here, and his heart was thumping with a sudden shock of excitement. As he watched excitedly as he couldn’t go back to sleep due to his excitement for gliding in the warm but fresh air. He couldn’t go back to sleep so he tried and tried but nothing worked as he looked up in the sky as he saw butterflies flapping their small wings in the warm sweet sun as blinked looked at the butterfly with an amazed expression and a hint of curiosity.

When Blink wakes up in the daytime he can not go to sleep no matter how hard he tries he can’t relax. He fidgeted and giggled he kept asking his mom over and over again ‘’is it time yet?’’ but mother always gave the same response ‘’soon my darling soon’’ he opened his eyes again he could hear the wood peeker stomping its beak into the tree trunk. He could see the rummaging beetles climbing on the trunk. He waited and waited until the night awakened as the dark shadows took over the forest as the forest is now silent and dark as the only thing that is heard is  Blinks own breath.

When It finally reached night mother owl opened one eyelid and said to little curious Blink ‘’It’s time to fly” Blink said with excitement in his tone “REALLY!!!” he stretched out his wings and high and he could he gripped onto the branch then he let go. He flew from city to city. And river to river. What a fly by night.

Mrs Anderson read us the book ‘First Flight’ by June Crebbin. We talked about the narrators point of view and used a Gemini Gem to prompt us to think more deeply about what the story might look like when told in the first person. I enjoyed using the Gem because it helped me understand more complexed words more better.

How we honour the Treaty of Waitangi

We explored the ways we still honour the Treaty of Waitangi today. The Treaty of Waitangi is important because in 1840 it they battled for the land. Today it is important because we respect the ones who lost their lives in the war. Something we found interesting was the fact that the maoris held wooden weapons and the British has muskets which was a unfair difference but somehow the maori’s were actually making it an fair battle.

Johnny Pohe and the Great Escape

Our task was to create a DLO that shows both perspectives of this event. Our group considered whether or not the risks that Johnny Pohe took were too high knowing if he made on mistake everything he risked would be wasted and gone in vain

Something we found interesting was how he looked the risk knowing the odds where shallow because if they where caught he would be executed on the spot.

The Kia Ora Lady

We read about Dame Naida Glavish, a wahine toia who choice to greet callers with “Kia Ora” instead of “Hello.” Her one action led to a massive change in New Zealand’s cultural identity.

We think Dame Naida Glavish was an agent of change because of how she realized that she doesn’t have to pertend to be someone she isn’t is.

Social Influence

Today in school, we talked about how what people see or hear can make them think or do certain things. We also talked about the good parts and the not-so-good parts of mieda, newspapers, and other ways we get information. My favorite part was learning about all of it.

Life In The Annex

We are reading the book ‘Diary of Anne Frank’. Mrs Anderson created a Gemini Gem to prompt us to think more deeply about what life would have been like in the annex, what we felt and why we felt that way.
I enjoyed using the Gem because it helped me understand more better about the words we know and don’t know.

In 1942, a young girl named Anne Frank was not allowed outside after 8 o’clock. Before the Germans took over, life in Germany was normal and everyday.

They had a hidden room in their building to hide from the Germans. The Germans would break into people’s homes if they suspected theft or robbery. They searched for hidden items and sometimes checked houses belonging to Jewish families.

There was a hidden closet or compartment in Anne’s building to stay safe. The tension was very high because the Germans would check the bookshelf in front of the hidden room. Everyone had to stay silent, because even the slightest noise could give them away.

Footsteps of the German soldiers could be heard as they walked heavily—creaking floors and loud boots. Inside the hidden space, it was dark, dusty, and lonely. Anne felt bored and hopeless, scared that the Germans might find them and take her family away.

She felt paralyzed by fear, and the darkness made her scared out of her mind. The only thing she could do was pray silently, hoping they wouldn’t find the hiding place. She remembers hearing that outside, the streets were empty because the Germans were searching for Jews who were hiding or late, and they were taking them away.

Expectations

We looked at why the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, who was involved and what we thought their expectations were. We used speech bubbles and thoughtbubbles to reflect this.
Something we found interesting was how there was no painters to draw the event that made history.

Short Division

In LS2, we practiced a way to divide numbers called short division. Short division is a quick way to divide large numbers. The person said their favorite part is solving the equation to find the answer, meaning they like figuring out the solution step by step.
